Cross of honour for Danielle Spera

Danielle Spera was awarded the Cross of Honour for Science and Art First Class on December 18, 2017.

Head of Department Jürgen Meindl presented the decree and honored Danielle Spera as “that person who gave Austrian current affairs its face.” He further highlighted her commitment to the reform of the Austrian Federal Museums through the “White Book.”

Laudator Cornelius Obonya paid tribute Danielle Spera as a great daughter of Austria. Expanding upon her career as an anchorwoman and correspondent for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), he stressed that she is an important factor in Austrian art and cultural life. As the director of the Jewish Museum Vienna, she created an awareness in the city of Vienna for the importance of this house, Obonya pointed out.

Award for "The Better Half"

The exhibition “The Better Half. Jewish Women Artists Before 1938,” which was shown in Palais Eskeles from November 4, 2016 to May 1, 2017, has won the 2017 Hans-und-Lea-Grundig Prize in the category of art education.

“The project has the great merit of not only having newly discovered an important part of the Austrian cultural and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also emphatically documenting the great loss left behind in art in Austria and Europe through the Nazi racial and extermination policies.” (Statement of the Jury)

You can find a personal account (in German) about the award by curator Andrea Winklbauer on our blog.
